EDITING & LEADERSHIP
Throughout my two years as a journalist, I was able to develop valuable leadership and editorial skills. Read below to learn more about my work and experience!
Highlander Magazine Editor
As a Highlander Magazine editor, I have led and produced multiple sections for three magazine issues. My role as an editor required me to be timely with communication, strict with deadlines, and attentive to small details in design, writing, and art or photography.

The 2023 - 2024 magazine was split into six sections: Moments, Community, Arts and Culture, Scotlight, Opinions, and Features. Each issue, as an editor, I ensured that all aspects of my sections aligned with the issue theme and our publication expectations. I also contributed to and facilitated class collaboration during our magazine production process.
Here are some examples of the planners I used for the sections I led in the magazine. Each content producer was responsible for pitching to me and showing me a skeleton draft as well as their overview on this document, so that I could best plan for spread design. Every issue I led a group of three to four people, including artists, photographers, and writers.

During this process, I had to be active in communication — whether through text messages or Microsoft Teams — in order to stay on schedule and ensure publishable content.

I was also responsible for providing guidance to my content producers. It was important to work together — especially with photographers to iron out any issues they may have with getting the best shot or trying to refine it using Adobe tools.

Once my group has filled out their part in the plan, I begin to draft a spread design. Since I value content creators' input greatly, I always make them an integral part of this step.

Finally, once all the editors have completed their initial draft, myself and other editors engage in circle editing processes to catch any errors in writing, art, photography, or design.
